Higher education institutions play a critical role in addressing global sustainability challenges. Through education, research, and community engagement, universities contribute to building the knowledge and skills required to support climate resilience and sustainable development. The Erasmus+ project ‘Greening Ethiopia’ represents an initiative aimed at strengthening sustainability education and environmental governance within Ethiopian universities through international academic cooperation.
Addressing climate change and environmental degradation requires not only technological innovation but also strong educational systems capable of training a new generation of professionals committed to sustainability. Universities are central actors in this process, producing knowledge, fostering interdisciplinary research, and preparing future leaders able to manage complex environmental challenges.
The Erasmus+ project ‘Greening Ethiopia’ aims to strengthen the capacity of Ethiopian higher education institutions to integrate sustainability principles into teaching, research, and institutional governance. The project promotes new curricula on sustainability, capacity building for academic staff, green campus initiatives, and stronger links between universities, policy makers, and local communities.
The project is coordinated by the Maastricht School of Management (Maastricht University) and involves European partners including Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and International Hellenic University. On the Ethiopian side, the consortium includes Haramaya University, Bahir Dar University, Mekelle University and Assosa University, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education.
The project contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly: SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By integrating sustainability into higher education systems, the initiative helps strengthen environmental awareness, research capacity, and institutional cooperation.
Through collaboration between European and African universities, Greening Ethiopia supports knowledge exchange, academic networking, and institutional capacity building. In the long term, the project aims to contribute to the development of a new generation of professionals capable of supporting Ethiopia’s transition toward a green and climate‑resilient economy.
